Every day, a new song about a different Marvel NOW! Title Monday: “Hawkguy” [Hawkeye] Tuesday “Godbomb” [Thor: God of Thunder]
Smash. Let’s talk about Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk.
This is further proof that everyone’s basically knocking it out of the park lately, being that yesterday I talked about how much I loved Thor (a character I’ve never had a connection with); and today I’m talking about how much I love The Hulk (another character I never really gave much of a damn about). Waid is doing the same thing he did with Matt Murdock in his Daredevil title, made him less of a brooding, dark character and fleshed him out to be funny, weird, and [most importantly] inspired.
With a reinvigorated Banner, we get a much more streamlined Hulk. Now knowing that every once in a while, Banner’s going to hulk out, he simply tells Maria Hill: Hulk is a weapon – when I go green, you point me at something, and I smash. And smash he does. It’s kind of glorious, watching Lenil Yu’s gorgeous art just having Hulk go all Hulk on an AIM base or whatever. And then Walt Simonson comes in at issue 6, and you’re like, “Wait does this make sense?” And then you see a Simonson Hulk holding Mjolnir smashing Frost Giants, and you’re like, “yeaaaah, this makes sense. And I like it.”

Every day, a new song about a different Marvel NOW! Title Monday: “Hawkguy” [Hawkeye]
Let’s talk about Thor: God of Thunder, a book that’s so metal, so anti-religion, so weird and twisted that there’s THREE different Thors fighting against a villain whose mission is killing all the gods. It’s a book that’s so grandiose, so biblical, so epic that I almost can’t believe Marvel is letting Jason Aaron get away with it.
I’ve never been the hugest Thor guy, so the fact that I am SO into this story says a lot about the writing, about the gorgeous Esad Ribic art, and about the villain Gorr, who Aaron even manages to make almost sympathetic and understandable in the break issue.
This is what comics should be. If you’re not reading it, you’re missing out, not the least of which is Thor riding a space-time shark out of his prison only to have another Thor rip the shark to pieces, so that Thor is facing Thor while holding the severed tail of the space-time shark. Seriously, it makes no sense, but it’s genius. All of it.
[Note: Please forgive any issues with the site recently, as Dreamhost got majorly attacked yesterday shutting down many of its servers worldwide. I've also been trying to tinker with my site to cut down on the load times, and I'm actually in the process of moving to a better server since traffic is warranting that lately. But as with anything on the internets, there may be weird hiccups during this transition. ]

If you’re a follower of this site, you know that I am a 100% Marvel zombie to the core. Funny thing is, I hadn’t really read any regular issue-by-issue titles until after the Marvel NOW! relaunch, which in my mind has created some of the best titles in modern comics in as long as I can remember. So every day, I’m going to release a song about a different Marvel NOW! title.
The first song/title isn’t exactly a Marvel NOW! title. I think Matt Fraction/David Aja’s Hawkeye was humming along before the big relaunch, but it’s close enough that it makes sense to include it here, right? Following Clint Barton’s adventures when he’s off-duty from being an Avenger, the book has taken on a weird kind of cult status with both fans of superhero stuff, and non-fans alike, and for good reason.
It’s a story about a regular guy, who lives in an insane universe with gods, superheroes, robots and crazy villains. We get to see Hawkeye beaten up, hurting, screwing up. In a weird way, it reminds you why you love superhero books: because the core of Barton is a guy who has a responsibility, and even a calling that forces him to take action. In another universe, Barton would just be a salty, bitter PI or cop, or maybe just nothing at all: a total slacker. But Hawkguy always manages to take action and selflessly give his time, his body and health, and his world to try to do the right thing. There’s something to learn from that.

I made a song about Grand Admiral Thrawn, aka rap game Mitth’raw’nuruodo. He’s MY favorite Star Wars Universe character. So y’know, that’s how much INDIE CRED I GOT.
I don’t know why I got in a conversation with someone lately about Timothy Zahn’s amazing Heir to the Empire trilogy of novels, so if you haven’t read them yet, then go read them. They are incredible. If you haven’t read them, then this song may not make much sense. Soooo. Yeah.
Note: Pretty sure the cover art is from here, I just found it on google images.

So I pretty much bought a 3DS last week JUST to play Fire Emblem: Awakening. After reading Stephen Totilo’s Kotaku review (which is incredible, and you should read it), it was pretty much a game I had to have. Since then, I’ve put about 12 hours on it, and spend most of my free time (when I’m not playing it) thinking about it. What an incredible, engrossing, addictive turn-based RPG, with no shortage of amazing characters, great gameplay, and just fast paced action. While I used to be the HUGEST JRPG fan, I never was a huge Final Fantasy Tactics, turn-based guy. This game has made me rethink that stance.
Before I get out of here, I just wanted to say to everyone who came and saw me perform in the past few months: thank you. I’ve done something like 32 shows in about 20 cities, and am now taking a break from touring until August or so. I put all my merch up on sale, so if you wanted a cheap tshirt, please check it out.
Anyway, please excuse the mispronunciations in the song (I have no idea how to pronounce Vaike). I figured this is a song I should post the lyrics, so check them out below:
“Grandmaster” lyrics:
Some think that I’m a master technician, grandmaster Cuz i put the pieces on the map for Anybody who asks, I got a squad behind me Always got my back for any problem that finds me
Woke up without a memory, Til these Ylissean shepherds brought me back from the edge Only saw a vision deep inside my head Where a masked man dropped from the sky And I lost control of my senses, before I took control
Now i’m casting every spell that’s on the scroll And Frederick on a horse, he covers the road While Chrom’s got the falchion, critical hits
And when we stand side by side, we never miss And Lissa taps me with her staff to heal my wounds like *ding* In a war with the risen and the Plegians Meet me in the war room, in a second we’ll be meeting them…
First off my girl, Sully takes the front Pretty sick with a lance, with her words, pretty blunt Then Lo’Qun he’s coming right behind with a killing blade Easy on the bandit, now he’s down on the canvas
Then just behind him, an arrow finds its way Virion took a break from admiring his face and Vaike, He’s swinging with an axe and brute force Then Sumia takes a lance with her flying horse (of course)
Ricken got the arcfire That’s the enemy’s barracks exploding Long enough for Panne and Nowi to go in Dragon beaststoning And now the enemy’s routed, so let us take a moment.. take a moment…
And I didn’t even See Kellam there So ask Libra to back him up with his weapon there Watch your back, because the wyvern reinforcements arrived So now, me and Maribelle fight side by side
She can mend my wounds, but can’t mend my pride And so I make every move like my life depended on it That’s why I put the fire emblem on it, The people of Ylisse never give in, you better call in
Every single soldier you got, every rider, every bandit Every risen, every sword that you can hand them Cuz by that time it’s too late, when the glass sword breaks And we seal your fate, b/c every move I make
Grandmaster, cuz I put the archers and the mages in the back For support while the frontline’s attacking And by the time this round is over Face it kid, you know you ain’t a soldier…
