If you aren’t listening to Welcome to Night Vale, then…well, you’re apparently in the minority as it recently reached #1 status on the podcasts section of iTunes. So it’s not like I’m turning you on to something that no one’s ever heard of. A lot of people have heard of it. But if you haven’t, it’s a podcast that is basically community radio about a town that is in the middle of the Twilight Zone.

Which is the easy way to describe it, but doesn’t really do it justice. It’s a show that’s ostensibly about hopelessness, where people find odd moments of hope or clarity in moments of extreme weirdness or even violence and oppression. It’s simultaneously funny, moving, unsettling, and fascinating. Sometimes, I seriously can’t fathom how they write a single second of the show, it’s so genius and heartbreakingly beautiful in so many ways.

I recently caught up with all the episodes while traveling, and let me tell you. Walking through airports and sleeping on the train while listening to Cecil tell you about Night Vale, you feel like you’re seeing some kind of secret to the universe that you could finally parse, if you could just stay awake long enough. It’s wonderful. So you should listen to it.

Big ups to Disparition for the amazing theme, and Vince Vandal for the production on the beat.

More free music on the way this week. wheeee.
