I don’t think you need me to tell you that you should read Sex Criminals. It’s already a hit in the comics world. Having a chance to reread the first trade recently, it’s amazing to me how the book that everyone thought would be the raunchy, sex-joke-filled romp that people like Fraction & Zdarsky would create actually becomes this touching story of love and acceptance, through the eyes of sex and the things that come with growing up and being a person in this unavoidably sexualized world. I guess, it’s exactly the kind of thing that guys like Fraction & Zdarsky would make.
I think sex positivity and sexuality should be talked about more in the nerd/geek world, and it’s frustrating to me how sometimes, the fact that I’ve built this seemingly family-friendly site (I mean, besides the cursing) means that it’s at times, difficult to know how much we should talk about it, right? I think the recent cultural events involving rape, harassment, the general misogyny and homophobia we see way too often could/would be mitigated if we could honestly just talk about sex, and how much it messes a lot of us up and how much it scares a lot of us. I grew up being terrified of it to some degree, growing up in a Southern Baptist environment as a very religious kid. I lost my virginity way later than most people would assume, and it took me a long time to figure out or even be comfortable about physicality, possibly because of my OCD, my own neuroses and anxieties, and because no one really ever talked to me about what any of it was supposed to mean.
Sex Criminals is a book that’s funny, you can laugh at the innuendo, the sex positions montage, the porn parodies and the liberal use of dildos and dick jokes. But in there are two people, messed up and finding acceptance with each other in a way that few other comics have come close to touching. How it’s okay to enjoy sex, no matter how weird, freaky and strange it may be so long as both of you are in it together. It’s a love story; and almost every single love story somewhere, beneath the Disney-like veneer involves a whole lot of sex. And that’s okay, right?
Like I said, you don’t need me to tell you to read it. Just read it. This song I made was way different than I thought it would turn out, but it was because I tried a few drafts making a whole lot more sex jokes. I think this way it came out better.
